Straight from the kick-off Woods looked for Bedeau, but the ball held up in the wind and an offside decision was eventually given.
In the early minutes Rushden controlled most of the forward play but Woods was resolute in the centre of the Gulls defence and Marriott was not put under any pressure.
After 10 minutes Bedeau went down but referee Webb saw an initial foul by Bedeau on Gier and the kick was given to Rushden.
A minute later Broughton tried a speculative shot but the ball went well over the bar.
On 15 minutes Andrews was caught late by a Jackson tackle to win a free kick.
Marriott was called into action on the 18th minute, but was fouled by Broughton and won the free-kick.
Sharp then made a vital challenge on Jackson, taking the ball cleanly despite a half hearted penalty appeal from Rushden.
On 24 minutes Jackson made an attempt to have a shot at Marriott, but the ball bounced out of play for a goal-kick.
Play was halted on 25 minutes to allow Nicholls to receive treatment following a fair Hill challenge for the ball.
On 28 minutes Crane went down in his area and needed treatment for a possible hamstring injury.
SUBSTITUTION: After 29 minutes Tynan replaced Crane in the Rushden goal.
The first real shot of the match came from Broughton in the 33rd minute forcing a good save from Marriott.
This was followed by a good cross from Kelly, but again Marriott was on hand to collect.
Play was then stopped to allow Andrews to receive attention in the 35th minute.
On 37 minutes Broughton let fly with a half volley, but the ball went over Marriott's bar for a goal-kick.
A minute later Marriott was forced to clear on the edge of his area with Broughton bearing down on him.
The first corner of the match was won by the Gulls in the 39th minute, taken short by Garner to Phillips, back to Garner, but the cross found no Torquay player in the area.
In the 41st minute, Rushden won their first corner, taken by Caskey but the ball was cleared by Sharp for another corner.
GOAL: From the Caskey corner, Broughton put Rushden one up with a near post header, scored in the 42nd minute.
3 minutes of added on time were then indicated.
The Gulls won another corner in the first minute, taken by Reed to Robinson, but eventually an off-side decision was given.

Neither side made any changes at half-time.
In the 46th minute a Sharp throw found Robinson, but there was no-one moving ahead to read the flick on.
Sharp conceded a free-kick following a foul on Broughton in the 48th minute, taken by Caskey, but fired over the Torquay bar.
Rushden won a corner in the 51st minute, but the ball drifted out for a goal-kick.
In the 55th minute Bedeau headed down or Hill, but Okuonghae managed to clear
A minute later Bedeau went through one-on-one with the keeper but he lobbed the ball straight at Tynan.
SUBSTITUTION: In the 57th minute Kuffour replace Robinson.
On the hour mark a quick free-kick was well read by Sharp, who headed clear for a corner, taken by Caskey.
Kuffour then conceded a free-kick in the 60th minute, which led to an altercation in Marriott's goal area, with 3 players blocking the keeper in an off-side position. Marriott still made the save.
A flick-on by Hill just ran away from Bedeau, following a Sharp free-kick in the 63rd minute.
In the 66th minute Sharp was almost caught out by Broughton, but Reed was quick to read the danger and came across to cover.
Kuffour went on a run and cut inside to let fly a shot in the 67th minute, but the ball went just over the Rushden bar.
SUBSTITUTION: In the 69th minute Berry replaced Turner.
A minute later Hill headed goalwards, but the ball bounced over and away with no Torquay challenge made.
A Reed free-kick was then headed onto the bar by Sharp, the rebound going out for a Torquay throw.
SUBSTITUTION: In the 75th minute Hewlett replaced Garner.
Jackson had a good chance in the 79th minute but fired just over.
Play then went straight to the other end where the Gulls won a corner, which came to nothing.
In the 81st minute Broughton should have put Rushden two up as he got behind Sharp but fired an easy chance over the bar.
SUBSTITUTION: In the 83rd minute Hunter replaced Broughton.
Another Gulls corner, taken by Phillips in the 84th minute, saw Hill head straight at Tynan, and more pressure saw another Gulls corner, which was taken short but charged down for a Sharp throw, the ball eventually ending up with Tynan.
With 2 minutes left Hill won a corner following a Sharp throw.
SUBSTITUTION: In the 89th minute Taylor replaced Sharp.
The resulting corner from Phillips found Taylor who headed just over the bar.
Another corner resulted, finally ending with a Torquay throw.
3 minutes of added on time were allowed.
BOOKING: Jackson received a yellow card with 2 minutes remaining.
With a minute left the Gulls won another corner and Marriott came forward into the Rushden area.
